What is a Texture

Within Maya you can apply what we call textures to the object that you are making. In simple terms a texture is the colour or pattern that you apply to your object to make it look as realistic or cartoon like as you wish. A example of this would be, I made a model of a PS4 in Maya and I used the texturing options to make my model look like an actual PS4.

Different Types of Textures

There is a large number of different texturing options that you can choose from when adding them to your models. In this tutorial we are going to be covering the more simpler ones to start off with. To start off I am going to tell you about each of them and what the differences are between them.

So the first thing you will need to do is hold down the right click button on your mouse while selecting your object and you will see this list. [Tutorial] Maya Tutorials: Applying Simple Textures Proxy.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Fgyazo.com%2F15175aeec86f832eb8e9917fee330155 Near the bottom of this list you can see the option Assign New Material. This is the option you use to apply most of your textures within maya. The main ones we will be covering today are, Blinn and Lambert. These 2 texture types can be edited in the same way but they make your colours or materials look different once applied. 

The Blinn texture gives your model a glossy look so that if you applied a colour or picture to it, it would reflect its surroundings and the light would shine off it. The lambert texture on the other hand is the complete opposite to that. What the lambert texture does, is it gives your model a matte look where there are no reflections on the actual material and the light does not shine off it very well.

Once you have selected one of those textures you should see the colour of your model change ever so slightly as it takes the effect of the selected material. Also once you have chosen one of them you should see the texture settings appear under the attributes editor on the right hand side, it will look like this.

Once you have a texture selected it allows you to customise the look of it, from changing its colour all the way to how it gets affected by different types of lighting in your scene. 


If you wanted to apply a picture as a texture all you have to do is select a texture type from the first menu that pops up then where you see colour in the attributes editor you press the checkerboard button beside it and a menu like this will pop up.

So as i said earlier to apply a picture as a texture you would press the checkerboard icon and then from this new menu you would select the File option and browse for the image you want. The rest of the options in this menu are fairly self explanatory by their names. 

For example, the leather option would apply a leather type texture to your object and a PSD File would allow you to select something that you had created in Photoshop and use that as a texture, so with a little trial and error it is quite simple to figure out what they do.

These features do not only apply to the Blinn and Lambert textures, they apply to most of the textures that you see in the first menu, those were just the 2 main ones that i focused on in this tutorial as they are used the most in simple texturing.
